If you participated in Communication 268/369 or Communication 199/299 in the Winter of 2008 and simply wish to continue on your existing project, do NOT use this application form. Instead, simply register for Communication 268/368 on Axess and send a confirming email to your project leader and to me. If you wish to do a NEW project (either instead of or in addition to your Winter project) in the Spring, then you SHOULD use this application form.
When one enrolls for Communication 268/368, there are two different options: the complete research option and the constrained option.
The complete research option gives students a chance to become fully involved in experiment research from A to Z. Students will be assigned to 3- to 4-person interdisicplinary teams of undergraduate and graduate students focusing on broadly defined research topics. The teams will generate research questions and design experiments to test their hypotheses about advanced user interfaces. This course will be more demanding on your time and more challenging than the constrained option because the class will require much more independent activity as well as consistent meetings with teammates. Comm 268/368 is recommended for students who want to immerse themselves in research and can afford to make a very serious intellectual commitment and time commitment. This option allows for significant flexibility in scheduling, but you will have to attend group meetings. You must take this option for a minimum of 3 units.
The constrained research option provides students with an opportunity to get involved with directed experimental research by working on pre-defined research questions and experiments. This course is recommended for students who want to get their feet wet in research, but cannot afford the intellectual or time commitment of 268, or simply do not wish to dive into a full project-based course.
The tasks are much more structured. The number of units on this course is defined strictly by how many hours you put into the research. This option has very flexible scheduling. You may take this option for a minimum of 1 unit.
The following page will provide descriptions of the projects.
